Yahuza Usman, a 17-year-old SS3 student from Almishkat Academy Jalingo, emerged as a rising star in the realm of poetry at the recent Hafiza Ibrahim Aliyu Schools Festival (HIAFEST 2024). His exceptional literary talent captivated the audience and earned him prestigious prizes at the event.
HIAFEST, established in 2019 by Alhaji Abdullahi Bala Kwatu, is renowned as one of the most comprehensive and rewarding schools festivals in Africa. It serves to honor the late Hajiya Hadiza Ibrahim Aliyu, wife of the renowned businessman Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu, Sardaunan Minna.

Yahuza’s remarkable achievements at the festival underline his dedication and skill in poetry. He participated in various categories including on-the-spot poetry, on-the-spot short story writing, on-the-spot literary essay writing, spoken word, and more. His ability to evoke emotions and connect profoundly with the audience garnered him significant recognition.
Yahuza secured several notable prizes at the festival, including the 1st prize for the Nigeria Prize for Teen Authors (Poetry), 1st runner-up position in On-the-Spot Non-Fiction Writing, and 2nd runner-up spot in the Spoken Word Category. He was also awarded the title of Most Valuable Contestant (MVC) Male after winning three prizes.
The festival, organized by the Hill-Top Creative Arts Foundation, took place at the Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre in Minna, Niger State, from January 17th to 20th, 2024.
Spoken word artists in Taraba State, such as Faisal Sale Muri and Fa’iza Yuguda Umar, congratulated Yahuza on his remarkable achievements, praising his talent and dedication. They emphasized the importance of supporting spoken word artists and recognizing their contributions to society.
