Taraba State University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Bako, mentioned on Friday that the university is conducting biometric verification for staff to eliminate nonexistent employees.

According to Nigerian Tribune, Governor Agbu Kefas, in a media chat in Jalingo, stated suspicions about nonexistent workers at the university and declared his intention not to remunerate them.

In contrast, the Vice Chancellor, while speaking with journalists, explained that the university’s management prioritizes staff verification to accurately identify both academic and non-academic personnel. He outlined that the system captures biometric data alongside the National Identification Number (NIN) of all staff to ensure precise records and move away from the traditional file presentation method during screenings. Prof. Bako stated, “We are transitioning from the conventional file presentation screening to implementing biometric verification linked with staff National Identification Numbers (NIN) to establish accurate staff data at Taraba State University. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive staff database and enhance the university’s screening system, thereby resolving the issue of nonexistent workers.”

The Vice Chancellor also disclosed that the university management, Taraba State government, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University, have come to an agreement to maintain a stable academic calendar.

“Fortunately, ASUU has no plans for immediate strikes. We have taken all necessary steps to ensure a consistent academic calendar in the university, and ASUU appreciates our efforts and has postponed their planned strike.”

He further stated, “During the meeting involving university management, ASUU, and government representatives, we addressed viable solutions. Immediate actions were taken, and the government provided assurances. ASUU has acknowledged the government’s commitment to resolving their concerns. As for the fencing demand, we have secured external support to address it. I am confident that the national body of ASUU recognizes the dedication of both the university management and the Taraba State government to meet ASUU’s demands.”

“I extend my sincere appreciation to Governor Agbu Kefas for his support in ensuring course accreditation and maintaining academic standards at the university,” added the Vice Chancellor.
