Hassan Jauro, the chairman of the Taraba State branch of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), has issued a warning against the diversion of recently distributed subsidized fertilizer in the state. This statement came in response to allegations that federal government palliatives, intended for the 16 local government areas and distributed through their respective chairmen, were being diverted and sold in markets across the state.
Jauro urged committee members and local government chairmen to closely supervise and monitor the distribution of the subsidized fertilizer to farmers for the 2024 rainy season. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the fertilizer reaches the intended farmers at the subsidized price.
Each local government area, except Wukari, received 1,200 bags of fertilizer; Wukari received 1,800 bags. The fertilizer is being sold at 50 percent of the market rate, with Urea priced at N23,000 instead of N46,000, and NPK at N11,000 instead of N22,000. The governor has mandated that no individual should receive more than five bags, ensuring the fertilizer is directed towards genuine farmers.
Jauro highlighted the governor’s commitment to supporting agriculture by providing necessary inputs to farmers. He also called on the local government chairmen to fully support these agricultural policies.
As the head of ALGON in Taraba State, Jauro pledged to do everything possible to support Governor Agbu Kefas’s agricultural policies, aiming to mechanize agriculture and create an enabling environment to expand farming in the state.
