A group focused on educating women about maternal health in Taraba State, known as “Mama2Mama,” has urged the state government to support its efforts to reduce maternal mortality and improve child immunization rates.

The organization aims to provide social support for mothers transitioning into parenthood by promoting healthy parenting practices, thereby fostering healthier and more sustainable communities.

During an advocacy visit to Lau local government area, Christiane Habila, the group’s state assistant health educator for advocacy and health promotion, emphasized the need for government assistance.

“We are pleading with our governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, to provide monthly stipends to support the women (Mama2Mama) in their daily activities. Additionally, the government should supply Tricycle Ambulances to help transport pregnant women to nearby hospitals during labor,” she said.

Taraba News reported that the group has around 5,400 volunteers across the state’s 16 local government areas.

Rahila Joshua from Lau added, “We have been promoting positive health changes, keeping children alive by discouraging home births and encouraging antenatal care. Although we receive some funding support from Gavi through UNICEF, we could achieve much more with assistance from the state government.”
