In response to the escalating insecurity in Jalingo, the capital city of Taraba State, Governor Agbu Kefas has implemented several measures aimed at addressing the issue. Effective immediately, Governor Kefas has announced restrictions on the operation of tricycles, limiting their hours of operation from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Additionally, he has imposed a complete ban on the use of all types of motorcycles, including power bikes, within the state capital.

Tricycles serve as the primary mode of transportation in the state, particularly in the urban area of Jalingo. However, instances of nighttime robbery involving tricycles have become increasingly common in the city. A recent tragic incident involved the brutal murder of a civil servant, Lawen Bazing, who was attacked by suspected robbers while riding a commercial tricycle to a popular night club, De Crux Nite Club. His assailants fatally stabbed him, robbed him, and disposed of his body in a drainage channel.

Governor Kefas has emphasized that strict enforcement of these measures will be carried out, with defaulters facing arrest and trial by a mobile court. Confiscation and destruction of motorcycles and tricycles used in violation of the restrictions will also be enforced.

The decision to implement these measures stems from the significant rise in criminal activities observed in Jalingo in recent times. To oversee the enforcement of the restrictions, a task force has been inaugurated, led by the state deputy governor, Aminu Alkali, on behalf of Governor Kefas. The committee, chaired by Commissioner of Police Joseph Eribo, includes representatives from various relevant agencies such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Taraba Marshal, and the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). The Secretary of the Home Affairs and Special Services Department will serve as the committee’s secretary.
