The Mumuye Cultural Development Association Youth Wing has issued a critical open letter to the Emir of Muri, His Royal Highness Abbas Njidda Tafida, accusing him of modern slavery and agricultural neglect.
In their letter, the Mumuye youth express deep concern over what they describe as the Emir’s “modern slavery” imposed on the residents of Kachalla village in the Iware ward of Ardo-Kola Local Government Area. They allege that despite the villagers having rented the Emir’s farmland for over 25 years, the Emir ordered the destruction of their crops and replaced them with grass for his cattle, leaving over 40 families without farmland.
The Youth Wing further criticizes the Emir for prioritizing his cattle over human welfare, questioning his role as the Chairman of Taraba State Agricultural Sustainability and Food Security. They argue that his actions undermine agricultural sustainability and could lead to food insecurity in the region.
The letter also accuses the Emir of mixing political ambitions with his monarchical duties, specifically targeting the Mumuye people for not supporting his son in a recent by-election. It highlights past incidents where the Emir allegedly made divisive comments and engaged in partisan politics, which the youth believe jeopardizes peace and unity in the region.
In their demands, the Mumuye youth call for a public apology from the Emir within 72 hours, compensation for the destroyed crops, and a reversal of his statements against the Mumuye people. They warn that failure to address these grievances could escalate tensions and disrupt harmony between the communities.
The letter has been copied to several high-ranking officials in Taraba State, including the Governor, Deputy Governor, and key legislative leaders, seeking their intervention in resolving these issues.
