Thirty-five members of the House of Representatives are advocating for amendments to the 1999 Constitution to introduce a rotating presidency among Nigeria’s six geo-political zones. They also propose a single six-year term for the President and Governors. Speaking on behalf of the group, Ikenga Ugochinyere, representing Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency, addressed a news conference at the National Assembly in Abuja on June 10. He explained that the bill aims to reduce government spending, enhance governance efficiency, and promote national stability through a single six-year term. Additionally, the group suggests creating two vice presidential offices—one for the southern and one for the northern regions. The first Vice President would be a succession VP, while the second would handle economic affairs. The bill also seeks to amend the Electoral Act to ensure federal and state elections occur on the same day and that all election-related disputes are resolved within six months before the swearing-in of elected officials. Ugochinyere emphasized their commitment to building a united, stable, and prosperous Nigeria.
