Gunmen on Thursday night fatally shot Abdulmutalib Jankada, the traditional ruler of Sansani chiefdom in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.

According to reports, the attackers targeted the palace of the traditional ruler around 9 p.m. The incident occurred shortly before the Nwonyo International Fishing and Cultural Festival, which was organized by the state government in Ibi Local Government Area.

An eyewitness described how the gunmen arrived in Sansani town on motorcycles, entered the palace, interrogated Mr. Jankada, and then shot him before fleeing the scene with his phones.

Residents, including Musa Sansani, initially mistook the gunshots for unrelated noise, unaware that the shots came from the palace. The traditional ruler’s wife discovered his body in his room, prompting widespread alarm and mourning in the community.

Nuhu Sansani, Mr. Jankada’s older brother, confirmed the attack, stating that the gunmen arrived around 9 p.m., shot the ruler, took his phones, and also injured a young man on a motorcycle before leaving the village.
