Former Ajax winger Finidi George has resigned as the coach of the Super Eagles. The announcement was made by former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye on X.com on Saturday.

Ibitoye posted, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”

George’s resignation follows the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) decision to appoint a foreign coach to oversee him, despite George’s recent appointment in May.

George, 53, had taken over after Jose Peseiro’s contract ended in February, having been his assistant for 20 months. However, poor performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin led to his demotion.

Consequently, George’s one-year contract will be downgraded, with his monthly salary reduced from N15m to N5m. His chosen assistants will also be replaced by the new foreign coach’s staff.

During a meeting with Sports Minister John Enoh, George expressed frustration over the lack of support from the NFF and questioned the commitment of Nigeria’s top players during the crucial World Cup qualifiers.
